Edinburgh Visitor Levy

Edinburgh Visitor Levy

Edinburgh Visitor Levy Information

From 24 July 2026, the Edinburgh Visitor Levy will apply to paid overnight accommodation across the City of Edinburgh. We've answered some of the most common questions below to help you understand how the levy may affect your booking.

What is the Edinburgh Visitor Levy?

The Visitor Levy is a charge introduced by the City of Edinburgh Council and applies to overnight accommodation within the city.

The levy is charged at 5% of the accommodation cost and applies to the first five consecutive nights of your stay. It is charged in addition to the cost of your accommodation.

Who is required to pay?

The levy applies to most paid overnight accommodation within Edinburgh, including Hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, Guest Houses, Self-catering accommodation, Hostels, Campsites and caravan parks.

Is there a limit to the charge?

Yes. The levy only applies to the first five consecutive nights of your stay. Any additional nights are not subject to the charge.

When does the levy apply?

The Visitor Levy comes into effect for:

  • Bookings made on or after 1 October 2025, and
  • Stays commencing on or after 24 July 2026.

Are any guests exempt?

Some guests may be eligible for an exemption under the Council's scheme. Where an exemption applies, the levy must still be paid initially, with eligible guests able to reclaim the charge directly from the City of Edinburgh Council through its rebate process.

How will the levy appear on my booking?

For applicable stay dates, rates shown on our website will include all mandatory taxes and charges, including the Visitor Levy. A separate breakdown of the levy will also be provided during the booking process and on your confirmation.

When is the levy payable?

The Visitor Levy is collected when payment for your accommodation is made.

  • Prepaid, flexible or non-refundable bookings: the levy is payable when you settle the cost of your stay, either before arrival or at check-in/check-out, depending on your booking terms.
  • Bookings made through third-party travel websites: the levy will normally be collected by the third-party provider when payment is taken.

As always, booking directly with Tynecastle Park Hotel ensures you receive our best available rates and exclusive direct booking benefits.

What happens if I cancel my booking?

If you have prepaid through a third party website for your stay and are entitled to a refund of the Visitor Levy under your booking terms, the levy will be refunded by the third party when your reservation is cancelled.

If no payment has yet been taken, there is no levy to refund.
